Resurrected Bites

The 29th September marks International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste 2022. Food poverty is an issue that affects over 811 million people worldwide, however, despite this, 14% of the world’s food is lost between harvest and retail and a further 17% is lost in retail and consumption, meaning that a total of 31% of our planet’s food is wasted without being consumed.

On this day of Awareness of Food Lost and Wastage, we would like to spotlight the work of a fantastic organisation working to reduce the impact of food poverty in Yorkshire, Resurrected Bites.

Resurrected Bites have a dedication to fill bellies not bins by offering affordable and even free shops to families and individuals in need throughout Yorkshire. This organisation supports over 300 households who struggle to get the food they need in our local community, promoting health and wellbeing, as well as a circular food economy where what is not wanted by one, is not wasted for another.

Resurrected Bites work with local food providers and retailers and run two community green grocers to distribute necessary supplies and food options. We are partnering with Resurrected Bites this International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste to show that the circular economy is important in every industry, not just in IT.

The circular food economy helps thousands of people around the world get the nutrients that they need to live a full and happy life and there is plenty that we can all do to help!
Resurrected Bites have provided guidance and advice for what we can do to make an impact and prevent as much food waste as possible:

  • Plan Ahead: 300,000 tonnes of meat, poultry and fish are thrown away every year. By planning portions and meals in advance we can cut down on how much goes to waste.
  •  Make Your Food Last Longer: Finding frozen alternatives to foods you usually waste, e.g., onions, peppers and fruit, or freezing leftovers of batch cooked meals cuts down on the amount of fresh food that goes out of date in your home.
  • Keep Things Fresh: Keep your food fresh by covering what is open, refrigerating your fresh products and cooling leftovers as quickly as possible after cooking.
  • Donate: Donating food to food banks or food charities allows your unwanted or unused food (as long as it’s in date) to be used by someone in need who will greatly appreciate the thought.
