Sustainable Careers

With sustainability trends ever increasing and companies starting to do all they can to reduce their negative environmental impact, sustainable careers and green skills are becoming more and more important. Employers around the country are looking for individuals who can help to advance their sustainability goals and drive forward environmental best practice.

Green Skills and Their Growing Importance

What are Green Skills?

The term “green skills” is often thrown around but what does it mean and how can you work to develop them?

Green skills are those that develop or support a sustainable planet. This term envelopes all knowledge, abilities, values or attitudes that promote environmental advancement. Because of this they are becoming increasingly important in a world focused on improving the Earth’s health both now and in the future.

Some key examples of green skills are:

  •  Recycling: an understanding of recycling practices and how they can be implemented to reduce the damaging effect of waste on the planet.
  •  Green Engineering and Technical Skills: You can’t expect a car mechanic to know the functions of an electric vehicle inside and out, just as you can’t expect a gas-heating engineer to know everything about solar panels. Traditional energy is drastically different to renewable sources and skills are needed to help advance sustainable fuel sources and technologies.
  •  Monitoring Skills: Being able to analyse and monitor the effects a company and its operations have on the environment is crucial for carbon reporting, waste management and sustainable development. An understanding of sustainability is needed to develop this skill.
  • Science Skills: Scientific development is fuelling sustainable knowledge and so an interest in environmental science is widely sought after.

Each of these four areas offer core green skills that bring a distinct perspective and understanding to sustainability. These skills, particularly when paired with a rich understanding of the environment, are greatly sought after by many companies.

Developing Green Skills

Developing green skills for yourself, as an individual, as well as for the workforce of an organisation, is important for the future of our planet and the advancement of our society. No matter your industry, sustainability focused skills will become a crucial factor, if they have not already, and so it is important to deepen your understanding and look to make a difference where you can.

Sustainability training is a fantastic way to achieve this! Individual courses are available, or corporate training is a good choice for workforce education. At Techbuyer we offer sustainability training for the workplace, hosted by our Sustainability Lead and Chartered Environmentalist, Astrid Wynne.

Sustainable Careers and What They Can Do for You

What is a Sustainable Career?

A sustainable career is any form of employment that works to promote environmental best practice and advocate for a sustainable future. Traditionally, sustainable careers have been centred around environmental technologies or projects, such as solar panel engineering, environmental management and electronic car design. However, nowadays the scope for green careers is vast.

A sustainable career can now be applied to almost any job if you develop the skills and understanding needed to use environmental knowledge in your role. Similarly, working for a company with a strong environmental focus allows you to explore sustainability in the position you play within the business. For example, within our own organisation, every team member in marketing, web, purchasing and sales is developing a career in sustainability and applying their industry knowledge of the environment to what can be classified as a common employment position.

Why is a Sustainable Career Important?

Green skills and broadening the scope of sustainable careers is an important step in creating a liveable planet for future generations. Developing an understanding of environmental best practice throughout the workforce allows ideas, solutions and innovations to flourish, promoting sustainability across the business world.

Without sustainability, our planet is going to struggle; every company and every individual must play some part in repairing the damage already done and limiting future harm to our environment.
