Rich Kenny’s Fireside Chat with Amazon Web Services

MD of Techbuyer’s sister company, Interact, and Research and Sustainability Director, Rich Kenny, sat down with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to discuss how hyperscale data centres can increase efficiency. This discussion was an incredibly popular event and the two discussed the importance of exploring IT hardware configuration for data centre efficiency and cost saving.

Astrid Wynne Discusses Sustainability Standards in the Data Centre

With sustainability practices becoming increasingly prominent within the data centre sector, our Head of Sustainability led a discussion on the importance of sustainability standards to measure success. ISOs are a key example of certifications that demonstrate continuous improvement in a company is acting in a sustainable manner. The panel also discussed supply chain codes of conduct and supply chain certifications for data security and traceability end of life.

We have Some Exciting News...

32% of employees agree that they would only work for an employer that prioritises sustainability.

Figures also show that employees want to take an active role in growing sustainability practices within their organisation. Taking a view that you cannot improve what you do not understand, we have offered IEMA certified sustainability training to all employees.

We are now extending this training out to any individual or business with an interest in applying environmental best practice to their operations.

Winning Large at the Data Centre World Awards 2023

Not only did Interact take part in industry-first discussions, but they also took home an award for Environmental Product of the Year!

Interact is the first tool to accurately report on the largest component of data centre energy efficiency: servers. By analysing a DC’s server estate and cross-referencing it against the thousands of makes, models and configurations in the Interact database, the tool can identify worst performers and recommend the optimal number and configuration of replacement models or suggest consolidation, virtualisation, and component-level upgrades.

This can have significant environmental impacts, including reducing energy draw from server estates, shrinking IT footprint (saving on space and cooling requirements), and cutting waste and embodied carbon through increased circularity.

Interact has analysed 300+ data centres, with recommendations that could deliver average 5-year savings of 9.6 MWh energy use, £1,100,000 costs, and 3,500 tonnes of CO2e. This translates to roughly 65% savings on energy and associated scope 2 emissions alone, plus the additional savings on embodied carbon by encouraging circularity.
