The ITSA Digital Trust Case Study

Refurbished Technology to Bridge the Digital Gap

“Thank you to Techbuyer and your big-hearted staff for your substantial donations of IT equipment. The equipment which you generously donate to ITSA is sustainably refurbished and re-used to enable schoolchildren in Africa and local community members in the UK to benefit from a digital education.

Having access to such technology can be the key which opens a world of opportunity, including providing life-enhancing knowledge and skills, access to further education, improved employment opportunities and better social inclusion for people who need it most.”

Geoffrey Newsome, CEO, The ITSA Digital Trust

The Challenge

Whilst IT skills, hardware and education have become second nature to many, in 2021 the UN estimated that 37% of the world’s population – approximately 2.9 billion people – have never used the internet.
Within Africa alone, the percentage of internet users is 20% less than the global average of 66% - standing at only 43%.

In order to bridge the digital divide and provide essential training in IT skills, access to quality technology is essential.

At Techbuyer, we like to ensure that no technology we receive ends up in landfill - establishing partnerships to reuse IT hardware is something that we continuously look for to extend the lifespan of technology.

The ITSA Digital Trust

The ITSA Digital Trust (previously IT Schools Africa) is a charity dedicated to delivering quality IT hardware to educational institutions in Africa, helping to bridge the digital divide in the developing world. The invaluable work they do provides children in Africa with access to computers, allowing them to develop essential skills for employment and future careers.

ITSA has given digital access to over 6m people through computer recycling – providing a sustainable solution for IT disposal whilst ensuring that usable and quality technology is put to good use.

“It’s great to be able to provide these quality  solutions for charities as well as businesses, to ensure these devices have a long and useful second lease of life.”

Benefits of this Collaboration

As specialists in refurbished technology and sustainable IT solutions, we work with ITSA to donate quality equipment that can be used by the charity in the work they do. We began donating to ITSA in 2019 – in the last two years, we have donated 10,060kg of IT hardware, including computer screens, keyboards and mice, to be used in schools in Africa.

Techbuyer practices a zero-to-landfill policy and so we are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to extend the lifespan of the technology we can’t sell, but that is still in good working order. The ITSA is a fantastic reuse partner for used peripherals that would otherwise head to recycling.

As part of our time off for volunteering policy, many of our staff members have chosen to spend time in their working days preparing the items for shipment. This includes cleaning and packing shipments to the ITSA trust, cleaning and testing hardware to ensure a high-quality of technology.

From our latest volunteering effort, we have packed a shipment of over 1,000kg to aid the charity’s efforts; we also included postcards from all of the members of the team who helped contribute to this package, sharing their support and good wishes.

Approximately 2.9 billion people have never used the internet - that's 37% of the world's population.

Delivering quality technology to the ITSA Trust allows us to make a difference whilst extending the lifespan of technology and diverting IT hardware from end-of-life processes.
