Sustainability at Techbuyer

Techbuyer is a sustainable IT solutions provider with the circular economy at its core. Our team’s priority is to extend the productive lifecycle of IT equipment and materials through reuse, repair and refurbishment to reduce electronic waste (e-waste) and conserve natural resources.

We believe a sustainable business is one that balances people, planet, and profit – the triple bottom line. We strive to deliver value across each of these key areas through our core business and additional employee-led activities.

Why is it Important to be Eco-Friendly with Technology?

The IT industry still largely operates using an unsustainable model. Through a take-make-waste approach to resources, the sector is responsible for over 57-million tonnes of e-waste every year, and this figure is rising. Without comprehensive changes, this figure will rise to 74.7 million tonnes annually by mid-2030.

This is problematic for many reasons. Firstly, IT hardware contains several Critical Raw Materials (CRM) that are in extremely short supply and cannot be salvaged via current recycling technology. Secondly, a huge amount of carbon is emitted during the production process of equipment (this is known as embodied carbon). The production of a laptop, for instance, often emits around 300 kg of CO2e. Finally, e-waste is generally disposed of improperly and without regard to human and environmental consequences, which creates serious health and pollution concerns.

The best solution to these issues is to increase the lifespan of hardware for as long as possible through reuse, repair and refurbishment.

Techbuyer’s Sustainability Goals and Progress

Being a sustainability-focused organisation requires constant innovation and creative iteration. To guide us along this journey, we are continually pushing ourselves by setting a range of ambitious goals and exploring how we can embed the latest best practices.

UN Global Goals

We have commited to three of the 17 UN Goals for Sustainable Development. Find out which ones and what we have achieved so far here.

Net Zero

Managing and reducing our emissions is a priority. Achieving Net Zero is the goal, but this is no easy job. Read about our journey so far.

Accreditations

It's vital we can provide evidence to back up our sustainability claims. That's why we've got several certifications and accreditations, which are outlined in detail here.

Our Research and Partnerships

At its core, sustainability is all about collaboration. Very little would be achieved without pooling our expertise with our network and collectively working towards finding new solutions and techniques. Extending the life of IT hardware can be complex work, so this is a priority for us, and it is at the heart of many of our ground-breaking research and educational projects.

Front-line Research

Whether it's through peer-reviewed research or industry collaborations, we're always exploring new approaches and educating the industry on the benefits of circularity. Take a look at some of our recent work here.

Partnerships

We pride ourselves on our extensive network of expert partners. Together, we are discovering new ways to maximise resources across the industry. Learn about our key partners here.
