What is a Tower Server?

Tower Servers are affordable IT solutions that are used by midsize organisations across the globe. The HPE ProLiant Tower Server range is an award-winning choice for today’s businesses, with boosted efficiency and flexibility.

Designed to be installed in upright position, a Tower Server stands alone in a cabinet called a ‘tower’ that is similar in size and shape. In this way, Tower Servers differ to Rack and Blade servers, and can be positioned outside of a cabinet. They’re typically placed underneath office desks and are mistaken as desktop computers, which look similar in appearance. For security purposes though, keeping a Tower Server in a locked cabinet is best practice.

Maintenance and usage

Tower Servers can work together performing multiple tasks. They can be easily added to existing networks due to their independent design. With the data being stored in a single tower, rather than across multiple machines, Tower Servers subsequently require less maintenance in comparison to other servers. However, they can have complicated cabling needs, along with requiring an individual monitor and KVM for management.

Small businesses generally prefer Tower Servers as they provide the processing power to perform a variety of tasks, from managing corporate networks to general database management. Single CPU (one socket) Tower Servers are a more cost-effective option to support basic office workload, whereas Dual CPU (two-socket) Tower Servers offer a boarder array of features to support more demanding operations.

Benefits of a Tower Server

  • Being simpler in design means component density is lower than other servers. This results in Tower Servers being easier to cool, reducing chances of damage by overheating.
  • Tower Servers are easily identifiable on the network, with it being possible to add an unlimited amount to an existing network. In businesses for example, additional servers can be simply added to support expansion or increased demand.
  • Customisable/upgradable. When additional features are required, Tower Servers are simple to upgrade. Or alternatively you can configure your server to your exact needs depending on your requirements.
  • Tower Servers make less noise than the likes of rack servers. This again is due to the lower density and fewer number of fans.

Whilst the downside to a Tower Server is that they require more cabling and are generally bulkier, smaller businesses often find these are more suited to their needs and budget. Large-scale organisations, with more demanding network needs, will likely find that rack servers and blade servers are their preference. There’s also the possibility to convert to a rack server as your business starts growing, since conversion kits can be added to majority of tower servers.
