Refurbished Server

Refurbished technology is equipment that’s had a previous life (this could include anything from a laptop to a server,) which is then put through a testing, repair, and upgrade process. This ‘refurbishment’ process is designed to fix any faults, increase performance and, in some cases, remove physical damage from the product.

In comparison, there are multiple conditions for new technology. These include Factory Sealed, New Brown Box & New Open Box. Factory Sealed means electronic components haven’t been previously used: they meet all the specifications of the industry definition of new and are in the original manufacturer’s sealed packaging. New Brown Box refers to a new IT part or device that comes without the original packaging. New Open Box describes new or as new in opened, original manufacturer’s packaging.

How does refurbished differ from new?

Refurbished offers cost savings but may come with a shorter warranty, potential cosmetic imperfections, and a history of prior use. However, they are generally tested and certified to ensure they function correctly before being sold and have been proven to perform as well and as efficiently as new with the right configuration. New, on the other hand, are brand-new and come with full warranties, but they are typically more expensive. The choice between refurbished and new depends on budget and preferences.

What are the benefits of refurbished?

As previously mentioned, refurbished products offer cost savings as well as quality assurance, and they often come with warranties, making them a practical and economical choice. They also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing electronic waste. Refurbished items provide access to older or discontinued models, ensure reliable performance through rigorous testing, and may even include upgraded features. Buying from reputable sources minimises risks associated with used products and supports a circular economy, aligning with both budget-conscious and eco-conscious consumer preferences.

When Should I choose new?

New is considered if the latest technology is required, as new offers the latest features as well as upgrades or releases. If you rely on specific software or accessories that are only compatible with the latest models, choosing new could be essential to ensure that everything works seamlessly. Or, new is often chosen when handling mission critical workloads because of the support of vendors; when vendor support is necessary the technology involved will need to be able to perform as best it can with the most efficient and up-to-date technology. However, you will have to accommodate the higher prices.

When should I choose refurbished?

Refurbished offers a way to maximise IT budget, increasing how much you can get for your money. Refurbished should be considered when looking for a more sustainable option; refurbished extends the lifespan of technology, as well as diverting e-waste from landfill. On average, 85% of a device’s carbon footprint comes from manufacturing so choosing refurbished helps reduce the impact of manufacturing and mining on the environment as the demand for new devices decreases.
