Can wind farms be used as data centres? – Support The Goals

In August 2018, Techbuyer partnered with WindCORES on a pilot project in Germany to support a data centre within a wind turbine. This new type of data centre required a sustainable IT solution, which we provided with our quality refurbished servers that prevent useful IT hardware going to waste. Support The Goals, an official Sustainable Development Goals website that features sustainable business success stories, published the case study in October 2019 to demonstrate our support of Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.

Article summary:

  • The WindCORES pilot project data centre is located at the power source itself in order to capitalise on existing infrastructure and renewable energy. Techbuyer’s refurbished HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 servers furthered the sustainability of the project and enabled cost savings.
  • Support The Goals explains that “Running data centres is a highly energy-intensive process… they currently use an estimated 200 THh of electricity per year, which is roughly 1% of the total global electricity demand and more than the energy consumption of some countries.” It is thus important to make our data centres as sustainable as possible.
  • WindCORES and Techbuyer won Sustainable Project of the Year at the Electrical Review Awards 2019.
