Stuck in the Lift With… Nour Rteil, KTP Associate Developer

Nour has moved almost 3,000 miles from the city of Beirut to the green fields of Yorkshire to conduct an innovative two year Knowledge Transfer Project with Techbuyer. Read on to find out more about Nour, Techbuyer’s KTP Associate Developer.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Beirut, Lebanon. Almost 3,000 miles from Techbuyer’s head office in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

What's your first memory? I can’t remember what my first memory is, probably when I was around 6 years old swirling in a red dress, wearing my grandma’s heels and making her laugh.

What did you want to be when growing up? I wanted to become a science teacher because I was really interested in science… I never thought I’d be a programmer.

How long have you been at Techbuyer? Almost three months now!

What is your primary role at Techbuyer? I am working on a two year long KTP project to develop a tool to model energy efficiency in data centres based on optimal hardware configuration.

What do you like about working in the IT industry? Working in the IT industry provides you with so many opportunities for growth and learning. I think it’s one of the most interesting industries considering all the new emerging trends and technologies.

Where did you work previously? I worked as a Solution Developer at Dar Al Handasah, which is a design consultancy firm based in Beirut. During my time there, I developed a health and safety management & analysis tool. I also developed custom SharePoint webparts and custom dashboard pages. I also had the chance to work on chatbot development just before leaving.

If you weren't working in the IT sector, what would you be doing? I’d probably be working as a business consultant or an accountant.

What were your first impressions of Techbuyer?! It seemed like a relaxed environment, everyone was welcoming, and I liked that there is music while working (we didn’t have music in my old job). I spent most of my time during the first week at the warehouse and I’ve never had the chance to see how operations happen in a warehouse before, so it was all very new and exciting to me.

What is your favourite thing to do out of work? I mostly like to relax and binge watch Netflix, I like going for jogs when the weather’s good.

Tell us something we don't know about you... I lived in Germany for 3 months during the summer of 2014 to do an internship. It was the same period when Germany beat Brazil 7-1 and won the football world cup. I didn’t know any German but I was able to recite a small part of the German football chant during football matches.
