Protecting USA Company Data: Techbuyer and the California Consumer Privacy Act

Data privacy has been consistently hitting the headlines over the past few years. From businesses that are unsure how to protect their data, to global corporations facing data breach fines, there is a lot of uncertainty and worry reflected in each news story. This is especially true when new laws emerge. Following the announcement of the California Consumer Privacy Act, we’ve spent some time looking into the USA’s latest data regulation in order to assess how it will impact both businesses and individuals.
What is the California Consumer Privacy Act?
The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is the most extensive data privacy law so far and should be on every businesses’ radar for 2020. Coming into force in July this year, the Act seeks to give people in California more control over their private data; data including but not limited to names, addresses and employment details.
Just as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies not only to businesses within Europe but also to businesses that have European customers, the CCPA impacts businesses with, or with the potential to have, Californian customers.
How will Californian customers’ data be protected?
Under this new act, businesses must comply when customers ask for a copy of their data and information about how it has been used. This can be requested up to two times a year, and businesses must respond within the given deadline. Company websites must also clearly outline how their customers can opt out of data sharing, which is an example of how the Californian law goes further than the General Data Protection Regulation of 2018. This will provide more peace of mind for people about exactly what information is held by companies, and what happens with this data.
How is Techbuyer protecting customer data?
At Techbuyer, we understand that nothing is more important than safeguarding sensitive data. We are always ahead of the game when it comes to best practice and have become CCPA compliant months before its enforcement in July 2020. It was the same scenario in 2018, when we adhered to the European General Data Protection Regulation months before it was law, and we even mentioned the CCPA in our blog before the details were announced.
The CCPA is expected to inspire similar regulations across the US, and so even if you are not directly impacted now, you are likely to be in the near future. There has never been a more crucial time to make sure your procedures are up to date, and to ensure your customers’ trust.
