What is Refurbished Technology?

The term ‘refurbished’ may seem self-explanatory but in fact it is a tricky one to precisely define. When it comes to technology, as elsewhere, there are differences that should be borne in mind when considering what we mean by refurbished and other related terms, for example, ‘remanufactured’. In practice, there's no specific definition of refurbished. Therefore each vendor or seller may mean something slightly different when using the term. So, what do WE mean by refurbished?

What is Refurbished Technology?

Refurbished technology is equipment that has had a previous life, anything from a laptop to a server estate, which is then put through a testing, repair and upgrade process. This ‘refurbishment’ process is designed to fix any faults, increase performance and, in some cases, remove physical damage from the product.

By following this process at Techbuyer we extend the life cycle of technology and save customers money – refurbished is almost always cheaper than new – and prevent technology from ending up in landfill. In addition, refurbished devices from Techbuyer come with an industry-leading warranty and access to technical expertise and support.

Why Choose Refurbished Technology?

Not only is refurbished IT hardware capable of performing as well as, if not better than new, but it also reduces the need for more Critical Raw Materials to be sourced by manufacturers to make yet more new devices that, within a few years, may end up being thrown away.

This is the current linear approach of ‘take-make-waste' and it’s one that Techbuyer is fighting against in favor of a circular model where technology is not simply discarded in favor of new, but is instead refurbished and returned to practical use.

As part of that, our dedicated technicians repair failed components where possible or deliver them to our ethical recycling partners if they have reached their end of working life.

Common Technology Conditions in the IT Industry

Alongside ‘refurbishment’, there are other ways vendors refer to IT that has been put back on the market.

What is Remanufactured?

A remanufactured product has the same cosmetic appearance and functionality as an original product, however, it has undergone some form of replacement. This could be simply replacing a faulty component, or it could be a complete tear down with a full replacement of parts.

What is Factory Sealed?

Factory Sealed means electronic components that have not been previously used: they meet all of the specifications of the industry definition of new and are in the original manufacturer’s sealed packaging. According to this definition, however, products do not have to be sold in the factory box in order to be classed as Factory Sealed.

What is New Brown Box?

New Brown Box refers to a new IT part or device that comes without the original packaging. Therefore, despite the “brown box” in which it comes, you are receiving a brand new component or device.

What Does New Open Box Mean?

New Open Box describes new or as-new products in opened, original manufacturer’s packaging. A new open box product could simply be something a buyer changed their mind about. Perhaps they purchased incorrectly, or it was not compatible with their device. It can mean you could be getting a completely new, unused item for a cheaper price.

Is it Good Practice to Buy Refurbished Technology?

Buying refurbished technology is good for the environment, for your budget, and good for the development of sustainable use of materials. Refurbished devices are capable of performing as well as new and providing a high-level of performance. However, it is important to choose a reputable supplier of refurbished technology to ensure that you receive a quality device.
