Background

Southern Co-op is a regional, independent co-operative with more than 300 food, funeral and Starbucks coffee branches across the South of England. Like most organisations in 2022, the day-to-day running of Southern Co-op is heavily reliant on technology and IT infrastructure. The co-operative had 400 redundant IT assets - a mix of unrepairable desktops and laptops, broken monitors, fully depreciated servers and old mobile phones that needed to be responsibly disposed.

Based in Portsmouth, Southern Co-op is quite literally the other side of the country from our Harrogate HQ (roughly 264 miles). However, we were still able to provide our secure GPS tracked transportation service. Our team of security-vetted ITAD technicians made the journey down to Portsmouth in our fully electric ITAD van to asset tag and remove all 400 redundant devices. As there was a chance that these devices could still hold sensitive data it was vital to Southern Co-op that we could guarantee the secure transportation of these assets.

On return to our ISO-accredited secure ITAD facility, our security vetted technicians again asset-tagged the devices to provide a complete chain of custody report to give Southern Co-op full peace of mind. Our data erasure experts got to work straight away, fully data sanitising every data-bearing asset using industry-leading data erasure software (the same software trusted by NASA and Government organisations around the world). The redundant assets were then individually tested and graded on their technical and cosmetic condition (this is done to make sure that we are reusing/repurposing/repairing as many devices as possible). As a customer-facing organisation Southern Co-op must adhere to GDPR and PCI compliance guidelines and have the correct processes and policies in place. It was therefore extremely important to them that the IT disposal solution would adequately protect their customer's data. Because of our ISO accreditations and certifications, Southern Co-op was able to guarantee that any residual data on its IT hardware would be effectively sanitised and it would receive full documentation of its compliance with data protection regulations. 

Zero to Landfill Guarantee

All 400 assets once processed, and data sanitised were refurbished for reuse/resale or sent for secure destruction whereby all failed assets were broken down to component/material level and sent for recycling. Southern Co-op has a strong sustainability focus.
