Driving Change in IT Habits

Increase the lifespan of your technology with Circul.8

Increasing the lifespan of the technology we have in use is essential to developing a circular IT economy and reducing our demand on system that is traditionally take-make-waste.

That’s why, for the past two years, we have been working with the University of Hull on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), exploring how device performance can be monitored against workload.

With this monitoring, companies can cascade assets through their business more effectively, matching applications to device performance. This means that, whilst a device may be under-performing for one workload, it may work perfectly for another, less demanding application, allowing for a more circular approach to IT provisioning in the business setting.

What is Circul.8

What is Circul.8?

Circul.8 is an open-sourced software programme designed to manage and monitor the performance of devices within your business. This non-intrusive programme can be installed onto any Windows device within your IT infrastructure and gathers information on the performance and health of the components.

With this information, businesses can then match device performance to workload demand, reducing the need to undertake full refreshes in favour of cascading IT assets to less demanding workloads.

Informing Circular Habits

Creating a circular IT economy isn’t just about recycling and reuse – it's also about slowing down how quickly we make products redundant. Not only does this give us time for recycling practices to improve, but it also encourages us to make the most of the materials currently in use, slowing the demand for manufacturing.

With Circul.8, expanding device longevity is a viable and beneficial business option, proving the business case for more circular IT habits.

Advocacy and Interest

The Circul.8 project is currently an open-sourced programme and has been well received by a number of groups and platforms, including the Government Digital Sustainability Alliance (GDSA) and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

We worked with students from the University of York to soft launch the Circul.8 product and gather interest in the project. Following this, we’re working with businesses around the UK, offering a free trial of the software to gather further feedback.
