Technology in the North

The North of England is known for many things: strong accents, friendly locals, stunning countryside and, of course, superior tea. But, when thinking about the benefits of the North, IT and Technology rarely come up!

However, in a recent study by DCMS Digital Ecosystems, it was identified that Yorkshire’s digital industry is the fastest growing in the UK. We think that this success should be celebrated and the importance of the Northern tech industry shouted about.

In a recent article published by the Yorkshire Post, GP Bullhound’s Hugh Campbell highlighted the wealth of tech innovation, success and achievements being made in the North of England. This piece came off the back of the recent Northern Tech Awards, ran and sponsored by GP Bullhound.

Techbuyer was awarded the TECH4GOOD award at this year’s Northern Tech Awards, an event that celebrated the success of IT companies throughout the North of England.
But it is not only tech businesses that are prospering in the Northern regions of the UK but also technological advancements. As Hugh Campbell describes, both AI and immersive IT are flourishing with the release of emerging technologies lead by Northern companies. Scotland is leading the growth of cyber security and mobility and, in Northern Ireland, health tech and fintech are dominating.

Leeds itself, only a stone’s throw away from our UK-based headquarters in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, was highlighted as a leader in technological development. The article describes the city as being “notorious for having skilled staff and is successfully attracting the funding needed to turbo-charge innovation”.

Techbuyer, as a sustainable provider of IT solutions, is focused on improving the impact of the technology industry on our planet through innovative ideas and research-backed technologies.
In 2019 we concluded a two-year research project with the University of East London in which we proved that the performance of refurbished servers matched, and even outperformed, new devices with the right configurations.

This research led to the launch of our sister company, Interact. The Interact tool reduces the costs, energy consumption and carbon production of data centres for a more environmentally friendly IT industry and a cost saving for businesses around the world. Interact is the first, vendor-neutral, machine learning, performance analysis tool of its kind and it was born in the heart of Yorkshire!

Interact is one example of how we are working to innovate, promote and advance the tech industry in the North of the UK. To find out more about our sustainable IT solutions or learn more about the work we do, get in touch with our team here.
