front cover of circular economy anthology available to download form 1st July 2022

Techbuyer is featured in the German anthology titled “Myths of the Circular Economy” (translated), a project published by Julia Böhm, Alexa Böckel, Ilka Weissbrod and Jan Quaing. This was established through our partnership with nachhaltig.digital, an industry-leading platform for sustainable economics funded by The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU).

The myth that refurbished technologies cannot perform as well as their new counterparts is a wide-spread misbelief. Techbuyer has been tackling this assumption for years, proving that second-hand enterprise hardware is, in fact, capable of producing the same output and efficiency as new technologies. Not only this, but it can do so at significantly lower prices and whilst avoiding carbon emissions involved in the manufacturing of any brand-new build altogether.

In the article titled “The Technical Argument for Servers in the Circular Economy”, the Techbuyer Research Team – consisting of Astrid Wynne, Nour Rteil and Rich Kenny – shares the results of their ground-breaking scientific research in collaboration with the University of East London to prove that refurbished servers and their components, if configured correctly, can provide the same performance and efficiency as new devices.

We’re still working on making a full English version accessible to our global audience, but for those of you who want to learn more, we have summarised the key findings of this amazing contribution below.

Key Points:

  • Moore’s Law has accurately described processor development since the 1960s, indicating that CPU performance will double every 2 years. However, recent research suggests that processor performance has not been improving by all that much in the last 5 years, despite new models being released regularly by manufacturers.
  • This led the Techbuyer Team to conduct their own research, testing servers and components for thousands of hours and with different configurations – from brand new to completely refurbished to a combination of the two.
  • Their results showed that all server configurations, new or refurbished, resulted in the same performance output. In addition, refurbished servers can outperform new generations with strategic component-level upgrades while possessing a significantly lower carbon footprint.
  • These results provided the basis for the birth of Interact, a machine-learning, non-intrusive, vendor-neutral solution dedicated to optimising the performance of data centres.
