Pedalling Reuse: Techbuyer Creates Bike out of IT Hardware for the UCI Cycling Championships

Earlier this week, we unveiled Techbuyer’s latest exciting project: our IT bike sculpture. The bike is made out of redundant IT equipment including servers, SFPs, CPUs and server memory, and will celebrate the arrival of the UCI World Road Cycling Championships in Harrogate later this month. The project also highlights the importance of reusing IT hardware.

Made out of almost 1000 redundant IT parts and weighing an impressive 60kg, the bike took local scultpurist, Steve Blaylock 100 hours to construct! With heatsinks as the pedals and seat, 20 server rails moulded to construct the frame, hundreds of server memory modules and a server fan which brings the bike alive with loveable eyes, the sculpture is certainly unique.

Astrid Wynne, Sustainability Manager explains that “Over 90% of used IT equipment can be reused, but despite this, 50 million tonnes of e-waste are created every year. At Techbuyer, we buy redundant IT equipment and refurbish it so that useful IT equipment is not sent to landfill before its end of life.”

“The bike is a creative way to demonstrate that redundant IT equipment has great value, and that we should reuse as much as possible.”

Techbuyer employees are currently deliberating over the bike’s name with Victoria Pedalton, Lance RAMStrong and Cycle Kean being some of the favourites. The bike has been visiting the Yorkshire sights over the past few weeks and will be stopping off at various race routes once the Championships begin. In the meantime, our social media followers can enter our competition on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to guess the city of our bike photoshoots and win prizes, including a year’s supply of Yorkshire Tea and a Betty's celebration gift box worth £50!

The UCI World Championships start on Saturday 21st September and run until 29th September. With each race finishing in Harrogate, millions of spectators are expected to flock to our hometown to celebrate the event. Kevin Towers, founder of Techbuyer comments that “Over 80% of our UK office employees have a Harrogate postcode, and we’re proud to have maintained our Yorkshire roots throughout our global expansion. We’re excited to welcome the UCI Road World Cycling Championships and to celebrate the sport with the rest of the community”.
