With a themed fancy dress parade, a gruelling but picturesque 2.4 mile timed course, and up to 90 teams pushing beds to the finish line, the Great Knaresborough Bed Race is always a wacky sight to behold. The historic event has been taking place every June since the 1960s and draws around 30,000 spectators each year to watch the madness unfold.
This June will be our fourth time running the Bed Race, and so clearly the challenge hasn’t put us off yet! We always love taking part and it’s amazing to see the support that the Yorkshire crowd bring on the day. We’re aiming to equal or beat last years’ time of 17 minutes 55 seconds with more training and even more enthusiasm!
In 2017, we donned lightsabres for the Heroes and Villains theme, and last year our customes were on another level with Julius Caesar style robes for a ‘Night at the Theatre’. Other teams have rocked up as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, ballerinas, The Great Gabsy and even oom-pa loompas – anything goes and it is great seeing the variation of outfits each year. This year’s theme is ‘Yorkshire’, and we’re going for a different look than you might expect… Watch this space!
You may think that we’re deluded for taking on the gruelling challenge once more, but it’s all for a good cause. This year we’re raising funds for local charity Leeds Congenital Hearts, which has provided incredible support for Techbuyer’s Head of Finance, Andy and his family throughout his three-year old son’s open heart surgery earlier this month. Not only did the doctors and nurses on the unit provide incredible care, but Leeds Congenital Hearts also provided Andy’s family with a room whilst his son recovered from surgery overnight.
The charity treats, advises and supports over 13,000 children and adults with heart conditions like Andy’s son throughout Yorkshire and Humber, and donations are always needed to make this support possible. If you or your friends and family would like to donate to Leeds Congenital Hearts, please visit our Just Giving Page.
Dan Shorrock, HR and Recruitment Manager has led the Techbuyer team through the Bed Race twice before and is rallying the troops again this year. He commented: “The Bed Race is an amazing opportunity to go out of our way to help others. Seeing local businesses collaborate with schools, clubs and associations in the Knaresborough community is always incredible. And all whilst keeping fit and healthy!”
“I’m looking forward to passing on the team leader baton to Joe McCabe, Goods In Technician this year, who I’m sure will do an incredible job leading the way. The day wouldn’t be possible without our team of runners and marshals, so as always a big thank you to everyone for getting involved. Let’s see if we can beat last years’ time!”
The Great Knaresborough Bed Race is taking place on 8th June this year. Don’t forget to donate and make sure you come and see all the wonderful and wacky bed decorations on the day. We’re looking forward to another unmissable race!
