Harrogate Hospital is First Hospital in the UK to Receive Innovative Technology Thanks to Donation from Techbuyer

Techbuyer employees had a tour around Harrogate Hospital’s Children’s Ward. The nurses demonstrated their excitement at the state-of-the-art thermometers they had just received, courtesy of Techbuyer’s fundraising efforts whilst competing in the ‘It’s a Knockout’ challenge.

It’s a Knockout is a highly hilarious, very unique and surprisingly difficult challenge designed to mimic the popular 90’s TV show, where teams battle it out in a bid to win with 10 different challenges throughout the day. Teams race around a bouncy castle assault courses covered in water and soap making it a slippery, cold, wet and somewhat embarrassing race. After coming second out of six teams, Techbuyer’s team raised almost a thousand pounds for Harrogate Hospital’s Children’s Ward.

The Woodlands Ward decided to spend the money raised by Techbuyer on four new state-of-the-art thermometers. When we visited the ward, the ward manager was beside herself with delight at her new toys! Harrogate Hospital is the first hospital in the UK to have received the thermometers which unlike traditional thermometers which have to be put into a child’s ear, can scan a temperature without making touch-to-touch contact with the patient. Traditional thermometers that beep in children’s ears can feel scary and invasive to a child who is already in an unknown environment and feeling unwell. These new thermometers will allow nurses to take the temperature of patients without having to wake them.

The nurse took my colleague Helen and I around the woodland ward showing us the different units including intensive care and the play areas. The ward often sees up to 30 patients a day up to the age of 16 years, and provides services in general paediatrics, ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgery, orthopaedic care and surgery, general surgery, maxillo-facial and dental surgery, and urology.

Heather Stuart, Ward Manager of Paediatric Services commented on the new technology, “The Masimo thermometer is a brand new clinical grade thermometer that allows temperatures to be taken using infrared technology. Temperatures can be taken from the forehead without the need to disturb a child who may be settled, sleeping or for those who get distressed when having their temperature taken. Risk of contamination between patients is minimised as it does not touch the patient. It does not require any additional consumables and therefore more environmentally friendly and financially economical. Nursing staff find them very user friendly and extremely satisfying.”
