Circular Economy in Data Centres Research Granted €1.245 Million – ITAM Review

Circular Economy in the Data Centre Industry (CEDaCI) is leading a ground-breaking research project to further circular practices in the sector. Over a year into its analysis of the entire IT life cycle, where the project brings together academics and industry experts from across the UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands, CEDaCI has now been granted €1.245 million to extend its reach into Ireland, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

Our Sustainability Lead, Astrid Wynne has been working closely with Deborah Andrews, Associate Professor at London South Bank University who leads the CEDaCI project. Techbuyer has been supporting the research by providing expertise as well as supplying data centre equipment for lab analysis, and will become an official partner for their project extension, starting in April 2022.

News summary:

  • “We are focusing on servers because they have an incredibly high impact,” explains CEDaCI academic lead Deborah Andrews, Associate Professor at London South Bank University. “The sector has gone from nothing to 7.7 million data centres at breakneck speed and the focus has been on delivering data processing rather than the materials.”
  • There are several pilot projects within CEDaCI tackling everything from reducing the amount of CRMs in servers, to increasing recycling capabilities, and furthering the reuse of quality IT equipment.
  • The extension will welcome two new partners, Free ICT Europe and Techbuyer, and new Associate Partner Host in Ireland. It will double the number of SMEs and technical assistance to 30 more SMEs and 10 Public Authorities and solidify the growing network of interested organisations.
