Techbuyer Pushes Charity Commitment with Great Knaresborough Bed Race!

It is always nice to walk the talk when it comes to supporting good causes, or even run if you can manage it. This was the sentiment Techbuyer took to the Great Knaresborough Bed Race this Saturday, to raise money for local charity St Michael’s Hospice. Weeks of training and bed decorating culminated in 17 glorious minutes of hill running and river swimming for a great cause.

Fit, fanatical and frankly a bit mad

Part fancy dress pageant and part gruelling time trial over 2.4 miles, the Great Knaresborough Bed Race is something different. Each year, 90 teams of six runners and a passenger – that’s 630 people – sweat and suffer around the course. As the event organisers state: “runners have to be fit, fanatical and frankly a bit mad”. The event brings over 30,000 spectators to the historic market town.

This year the theme was ‘Night at the Theatre’ so we chose the Shakespeare classic, Julias Caesar. Other floats were decorated as Swan Lake, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Peter Pan, Aladdin, (seven) Schools of Rock and the judges’ favourite, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

“As HR Manager, I believe a fit, happy and healthy workforce perform better at work,” explained said Dan Shorrock, Global HR and Recruitment Manager and Techbuyer bed race captain, “The bed race promotes cross-department team building and is very challenging and fun – a lot like our company culture. We had an amazing day and are pleased to have raised money for a great charity. A lot of Techbuyer staff have a close affinity with St Michael’s Hospice. Without donations, they wouldn’t exist. There is no other service like it in Harrogate. Thank you to everyone who donated, ran, marshalled and turned up to support us! Bring on bed race 2019,”

Techbuyer beat personal best!

2018 was the fourth time Techbuyer entered a bed. The team beat our course record by over a minute with a time of 17 minutes 55 seconds. We placed 30th out of 90 beds meaning we automatically win a place for the 2019 bed race.  Considering the very long, steep hill and finale of a swim through the wild waters of the River Nidd, this was quite an achievement!

All for a great cause

Masochism is a bit of a feature at Techbuyer. Staff regularly run events to raise money for St Michael’s Hospice and other vital causes. Later this year, numerous members of the team are running the Great North Run for charity.

“Challenging ourselves to run a half marathon is a fantastic way to generate awareness and raise money for a good cause. There’s four of us from Techbuyer running the Great North Run this year with the aim of raising over £1,500,” said Ellie Puddephatt, Sales Executive currently training for the Great North Run 2018.
