Helping to Make Wishes Come True: Make-A-Wish Australia and Techbuyer

Towards the end of 2020, Techbuyer had the pleasure of working with Make-A-Wish, the world’s largest wish-granting organisation and one of Australia’s most trusted charities. By helping them to sell their excess IT equipment, as well as securely erasing their data, the extra funds generated meant that they could continue to support families with critically ill children despite the impact of the pandemic on the charity sector.

Inspired by the remarkable work that the Make-A-Wish foundation does across Australia and globally, Techbuyer wanted to look at other ways to support the cause. We decided to donate to Make-A-Wish New Zealand and Make-A-Wish Australia.

Supporting critically ill children in Asia Pacific

Monetary donations fund the wishes of critically sick children, as well as complement medical treatment and support for their families, giving hope and joy when needed the most. As a registered charity, Make-A-Wish rely solely on the generosity of volunteers and supporters to make wishes happen.

Each child has a unique story, and the work of the organisation aims to provide each of these critically ill children with the life-changing power of a wish. From creating special sanctuaries in hospitals, to allowing a child to be a real-life superhero for a day, the wishes build confidence, resilience and create lasting memories. They give sick children the opportunity to just be kids and enjoy moments other families may take for granted.

Truly incredible work has taken place to make thousands of children’s wishes come true, however it’s estimated that around 800 children are still waiting for their wish to be granted in Australia alone.

Making wishes come true

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the organisation has been experiencing a building backlog of wishes, but with the help of Techbuyer’s donation, Make-A-Wish is making headway to grant as many wishes as possible.

Travis Ryan, Group Head of Technology and Infrastructure at Make-A-Wish was extremely grateful for the donation: ‘Thank you so much to the Techbuyer team – both Make-A-Wish Australia and Make-A-Wish New Zealand are very appreciative! As a community-based organisation, we couldn't bring hope to children with critical illnesses without the support of businesses and individuals across Australia. We're so happy to have Techbuyer as a member of the Make-A-Wish community, supporting wish kids and their families.’

Each year, the charity celebrates Make-A-Wish Day in which aims to raise awareness of the work the organisation does and raise more funds to continue their work. The theme for 2021 is ‘Don’t wait for hope. Create it.’ Following many of us being affected by the coronavirus outbreak, it’s building on the theme of ‘waiting for hope’, highlighting that hope is essential for children and is something we can all create for them. Supporting the charity means giving children the strength to look forward to better days.
